Me and my work

Cancer research scientist

I am a cancer research scientist, currently looking mainly at why people get leukaemia.  I also look for ways which we can use less toxic drugs which are suited to each cancer patient, rather than giving everybody the same drugs even though their cancers are different.

You can read more about why I became a cancer research scientist here:

My Typical Day

Never, ever the same!

My typical day normally involves a bit of time in the various labs in the institute.  Often I am feeding cells in a room called ’tissue culture’ where we grow cancer cells in petri dishes, but also spending a bit of time on the computer analysing the results from my experiment and writing my lab book so i can remember what I have done!

What I'd do with the money

Design booklets for schools for cool experiments to do in science lessons/clubs.

I would design booklets describing experiments that students and teachers can do at school, which are similar to things we do in the actual research labs, using only things found in the supermarket or school science labs. In my research, I spend a lot of time getting DNA out of human cells, but oneof my favourite experiments to do with students is getting DNA out of food! What has more DNA in it? A banana, strawberries or a chicken sandwich?! I would write a booklet with these types of experiment, and describe how we do almost exactly the same things in the lab to research cancer and other diseases!
