      May be you have seen fireflies ? You can see them sometimes in the evening (during summer).

      A lot of animals living in what is called the pelagic zone (i.e. open water rather than on the bottom) below depths where light can penetrate use bioluminescence. Some can squirt bioluminescent liquid as a means of distraction to escape predators! If you google images of bioluminescent jellyfish you will see some really cool examples.
