I am interested in chronic inflammatory bowel disease. We are working on one small protein called Interleukin-10. If Interleukin-10 is not made, then we would develop a strong inflammatory bowel disease. Luckily this is very rare. It is quite possible that patients suffering from inflammatory bowel disease do have a misbalance of the immune system.
-
My Typical Day:
A lot of meetings with scientists, reading scientific papers, teaching.

I am also coordinating an EU research program called SYSMEDIBD (http://www.sysmedibd.eu). It is about systems medicine of inflammatory bowel disease. The aim of systems medicine is to find the best possible treatment for a patient based on multiple parameters that we can determine using for example modern genome analysis technology.
