I’m lucky because I am friends with a lot of people I work with. Infact, my best friend works in the lab with me. It’s really nice having her around. I don’t work with her all of the time though, but our desks are close together, so when we are both working on our computers we are closeby. I’m also friends with a lot of people in the same building, but from other labs too – it’s always nice to hear about what they are doing in their work. I really like the people who work in my building, we have events like bake sales for charity where we compete to make the best cake, these events are always a really good chance to get to know each other.
It is interesting, its most likely a mixture. In science you usually do not work alone. You work together with many different type of people. Some then become friends.
One of my best friends from home is also doing a PhD at the same university as me so that is nice. I’ve also made friends with a lot of people in my lab, office and from other departments, as scientists enjoy talking and exchanging ideas with other people. I am also lucky to be part of a graduate school ran by my funding body (MASTS) which means that I have met a lot of people from other universities in Scotland who I can exhcnage ideas with.
