may be for me this was the fax machine. I still remember when we received a fax in our institute send from the USA to Germany. It was almost instant. Usually we had to wait 1 to 2 days to receive a letter. Now we have internet of course.

I would have to say, the internet. I’m (just about) old enough to remember when the internet didn’t exist. Next we had dial-up internet, which is when you used your phone line for accessing the internet, and nobody could use the phone whilst you were on it! It was really slow, and even loading a picture could take quite a lot of minutes. The internet has completely revolutionised the way that research science works too – we can now email each other, download research papers and experimental protocols and even recieve results by email. My job would be so much harder without the internet.

SCUBA gear! I love going scuba diving to see the world beneath the waves and this is made pretty easy by the invention of self contained underwater breathing apparatus (SCUBA).

The Internet is pretty wonderful. I struggle to remember how we did things in the old days!

But I’m going to say vaccination. The ability to keep mankind (largely) free from disease has just made such a huge to the way we live. If only we could do more!

The simple toilet also deserves a mention. It’s possibly the biggest advance in public health ever!
