Babies can in fact open their eyes when new born, however, they are very sensitive to light, so will often close them if lights are too bright. Human babies are very reliant upon parents and can’t look after themselves at all, however, babies of other species are born at a much more advanced state, for example, the babies of marine mammals such as whales and dolphins, which can swim as soon as they are born!

it depends on species. In human there is a different order of events compared to other species. I do not think that it is due to a reaction is slow or fast. It is all about what do we need first. We do not have to see directly after birth.
