Genetics are the basis to every living thing. All living things have DNA made up of the same basic structure, but look and behave very differently depending upon their genetics, i.e. which genes are switched on and off, which form of a gene someone, or which combination of genes a person has. Genes underly everything from the way we look, how likely we are to get certain diseases, whether we have a disability when we are born, how likely we are to be good at different things, everything! It’s a really cool and exciting field to work in 🙂

I was more into electronics initially but after reading a book about DNA and the genetic code, I thought, life might be buildup just like complex electronic circuits. I thought, how nice, just get into it and understand how life works. It was simple then, now I know it is much more complex then I initially thought. I clearly underestimated the complexity of (even) simple life forms like bacteriophages.
