Great question!
I am sure you are aware of global warming and how it is warming up the world. This warming leads to plants losing more water, not only this, but the weather is changing and we are getting longer periods of no rain and when it does rain it all comes at once and the plant cant absorb it all.
This years summer is a good example of increased temperatures and decreased rain.
Are our crops now designed so well to produce a high yield when the weather is ideal and very little if the weather is not so ideal? On the other hand, old crop variants may not give us the high yield when the weather is ideal but still something if the weather is not so ideal?
